"Reverie" is the home of Bob and Susan King. "It was given the name by the original owners seventy years ago. We feel that the French interpretation - to dream - was appropriate to the feelings invoked by the Lake Michigan views." -- Bob King Bob and his first wife, Shari, bought the home in 1985 and used it for vacations with the intention of making it their retirement home. Renovation was almost complete at the time of Shari's unexpected death in 1997. Following this tragedy, Bob became re-acquainted with Susan who was Shari's roommate in nursing school in the 1960's. After Bob and Susan's marriage in 1999, they decided to open this beautiful home as a bed and breakfast so that others might enjoy the happiness and good times the house has known in the past. Bob and Shari were the third owners of this home. Dr. and Mrs. I. R. Canfield of Ann Arbor, Michigan built it in 1935. It was one of three bluff top waterfront properties developed about the same time by prominent University of Michigan faculty. Due to Dr. Canfield's sudden death, the property was sold in 1940 to a Chicago restauranteur, Mr. John R. Thompson, who owned it for over 40 years. The property is still known locally as the "Thompson House." Following Mr. Thompson's death, the land was developed as the "Bluffs Of Frankfort" condominiums. The house sat vacant, however, until Bob and Shari King purchased it in 1985. It underwent extensive rebuilding and expansion between 1995 - 1997 in anticipation of the King's moving to Frankfort following retirement. The Ann Arbor firm of Woolworth & Lorree originally designed the house for Dr. and Mrs. Canfield in 1935. The actual builders of the home are unknown, but at that time many Frankfort summer homes were built by itinerant construction teams who "camped out" while working on several homes at one time. It seems likely that this was the case for "Reverie". The remodeling from 1995 - 1997 is the result of collaboration of Bob and Shari King and Dan Collier, a local builder. Most of the innovative storage features are Dan's design. The original style was pre-war modern. During the renovation, elements of the design were retained, but expanded to accommodate the usage of both the owner and his extended family and guests. The natural beauty of Lake Michigan and numerous majestic trees on the property were capitalized on by adding more and larger windows to the original structure. |
